The International Student Program at Bourgade Catholic High School is a unique opportunity for your family to open up your home and have young international student enrich your family with the sharing of new ideas, perspectives and culture. When you welcome an international student, you will receive a wonderful young man or young woman who soon becomes a member of your family. As a host family you have a unique opportunity to be ambassadors of our great nation an share with your international student the beauty of American culture in an intimate family setting. Your international student will share the beauty of the culture from which they come from and together you will build a lasting/longlife relationship. International students present your children an exceptional opportunity to become global as the friendship they form with international brother or sister helps build bridges in the global community.
International student programs are growing rapidly in Phoenix as well as in our country. Many international students are waiting for a wonderful family, like yours, to open their home and provide the opportunity for such students to reach out and learn about the world around them. Bourgade Catholic High School is currently screening families who are open and willing to welcome an international student into their home and family. We invite families to welcome international students who want to study at Bourgade Catholic beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year. Families who meet our qualifications and host a student will receive a stipend to assist with the costs associated with adding an international brother or sister to the family. If you are interested in becoming a host family, please contact Mr. Javier Bravo in the International Student Office at Bourgade Catholic High School (602) 973-4000 ext. 311 or jbravo@bourgade.org. International Students are waiting for YOU!Some of the qualifications for being a BCHS ISP host family are: - Each member of the family must go through the Safe Environment Training program offered by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix (schedule for Thursday, March 15, 2012). - Families wishing to be a host family cannot be receiving any form of government assistance. - Families need to schedule a home visit/interview with the Director of the International Student Office - Families are asked to include the international students as members of their own family. Families must be able to provide international students with a room, area for study, internet connection, meals of the day, and transportation to and from school. - Families need to provide an emotional environment that is healthy and where the students receive encouragement, support, and guidance. - Families who are able to host an International Student for 1 or more years. Having an international student means bringing international students into everyday aspects of life. These shared aspects include some of the following activities: - Sharing in everyday family activities, such as eating meals together. - Joining in family outings and recreational activities at home or away from home, as the students's academic schedule allows. - Inviting the international student to attend religious services with the host family, or joining a church youth activity at least one time a week with host family members. - Sharing in the family's household jobs in the same way that other family members would participate. Each host family has its own plan, but these jobs may include helping to wash dishes, prepare meals, clean the house, do laundry or yard work, etc. Living in the family means that all family members share fun times and work times together, which is very different from renting a room at a boarding house or a hotel. - Showing respect for, and cooperation with, family rules about curfew and activities with friends. Host parents function as substitutes for the international student's biological parents and therefore must be informed of the student's activities and whereabouts at all times. Assisting the international student with communicating on a personal or emotional level about happy or sad feelings, problems at school, personal concerns, etc. - Practicing politeness, kindness, good manners, honesty, and thoughfulness toward all family members. - Attending school games and other activities where the international student may be participating. International students need to be encouraged to join an athletic team or club in order to get the full benefit of the school experience. |
