PHOENIX – Bourgade Catholic High School’s track and field program is off to a historic start this season and gaining momentum with standout performances from both the boys and girls teams.
In his second year as head coach, KiAndre Whitmore said the foundation for the season was set during preseason training, where consistency and finishing were key points of emphasis. Five athletes from last year’s team returned, including two seniors, bringing experience to a developing roster.
I feel very good and excited about this season,” Whitmore said. “The preseason numbers showed who’s bought in to what we as coaches are doing.”
That early commitment has translated into results. The girls sprint medley relay team set a new school record with a time of 2:01.51. The group, of Firutuna Michael (’28), Marley Ruffin (’27), Aitana Pusac (’26), and Aubrey Martinez (’29), followed the performance with back-to-back meet victories, continuing to elevate the program’s standard. They are also closing in on the school’s 4x400 relay record and is currently ranked 10th in the division.
Early meets in March also highlighted the team’s competitive mindset. Martinez demonstrated resilience and determination across multiple races, including a performance in which she closed the gap on a competitor and pulled ahead late. On the boys side, Noe Hernandez (’28) contributed in the 4x400 relay, stepping into a key role and delivering a steady performance that helped the team improve.
Junior Malaki Aguilera, who competes in the 400- and 800 meter events as well as both relay teams, said he is focused on lowering his times and challenging school records. He also pointed to the importance of relay performance as a measure of team success.
“Our relay teams have strong chemistry. We stick together when someone struggles, and that helps us perform better,” he said.
Whitmore said building that sense of unity is central to the program’s identity. In addition to competition, he emphasized creating a family-like environment where athletes support one another while continuing to develop. The program also benefits from training alongside collegiate athletes and younger runners, adding an extra level of motivation.
Looking ahead, Whitmore said he hopes to see relay teams qualify for division and state competition as the season progresses. He also pointed to upcoming meets including a home meet on April 23 and encourages the BCHS community to come out and show their support and cheer on the team.
