Senior-Led Bourgade Catholic Baseball Off to Best Start in a Decade

PHOENIX – After a challenging 4-13 season in 2025, the Bourgade Catholic High School baseball team has started the 2026 campaign on a high note, posting a 9-4 record through the first month of the season, the program’s best start in a decade.

Head coach Noah Mayers, in his fourth season at the helm, credits the team’s offseason work and veteran leadership for the early success. “The offseason was extremely productive,” he said. “The guys committed to the weight room, arm care, and skill development. We’ve already seen a noticeable physical growth and improvement on the field. The senior class has stepped into strong leadership roles, and the chemistry within the group has been excellent.”

Bourgade began the season with the Cougar Classic Baseball Tournament for the third consecutive year, a move designed to prepare the Golden Eagles for the challenges of region play. “Tournament play challenges our depth, pitching management, and mental toughness right away and sets the tone.” Mayers explained.

Senior Tyson Trujillo, a versatile  player who covers shortstop, third base, pitcher, catcher and occasionally first base, said the early tournament success has boosted the team’s confidence. “I am feeling really confident in our team this year. It seems everyone has been working on their bats this offseason,” he said. “The team chemistry is great so far. Most of us have been playing together since our freshman year, so we’ve been able to keep a strong chemistry.”

Trujillo, one of three returning All-Region players along with Alexander Guzak (’26) and Oscar Garcia (’28), said the team’s biggest strength is momentum. “When one players gets momentum, everyone picks it up and carries on the energy,” he said.

“Our main goals this season are to compete every inning, improve our freedom games record, and continue building a program that represents Bourgade Catholic the right way,” Mayers said.

For Trujillo, this season carries special meaning as his final year in a BCHS uniform. “I’m excited because I believe we have a strong chance to make the playoffs,” he said.
